One of the Mediterranean’s most historic and revered sailing events, the Rolex Giraglia returns from 10-18 June for its 69th edition. Partnered by Rolex since 1998, the competition is renowned for its Corinthian spirit and as a standard bearer for the traditional values of sailing. For the first time since 2019, the organizers will be able to put in place a full programme of events. The picturesque French coastal town of Saint-Tropez will host a three-day inshore series as well as the start of the week’s main event, the 241-nautical mile (446km) offshore race to Genoa, Italy. Regularly attracting an international fleet of more than 200 yachts from over 20 countries, the offshore race is short and intense in nature. It is divided into three distinct segments: from the start to La Fourmigue turning mark off Le Lavandou; from there the leg out to the Giraglia rock, located off the northern tip of Corsica, and the race’s undeniable symbol; and then, as competitors contend with fatigue, from the rock to the finish line off the Yacht Club Italiano’s clubhouse in Genoa. While the frontrunners challenge for line honours, the sought-after overall victory on handicap can be won by any yacht in the fleet. Qualities that always defines the winning crew are togetherness, dedication and tactical excellence.
